Groups Views:  For 20 years, the SSS has published personal views or PVs - the kind of alphabetic reform that appealed to an individual.  After publishing nearly 50 of these largely ignored works on phonemic spelling with no indication that anyone was persuaded to use them, a new approach was advocated in 2005, orthography by committee.  It is not enough that the scheme appeal to one person, unless about five people are convinced that this is the way to represent spoken English, there is little likelihood that any progress will be made.

Groups views are not that new.  New Spelling and ALC Soundspel were certainly group views.  They were developed and refined by more than one person.  Both had a long multi-year development cycle.  The new group views (GV's)  take advantage of the Internet to speed up the exchange of ideas.  The development cycle can usually be reduced from 6 years to 6 months for a new group view.

Bob Brown set up a typology for spelling schemes (www.spellingsociety.org).  For our purposes we need only distinguish dictionary keys which are nearly 100% phonemic, systems with less than 12 exception rules, and other schemes which emphasize minimal chanage and minimal visual disruption.

Dictionary Keys (1 symbol per phoneme) -  There are a number of published dictionary keys.  The IPA is becomming the most popular pronunciation key found in the various dictionaries.  Perry published one of the first dictionary keys which is still worth checking out.  Perry may have been one of the first to use the "smiley" or breve accent to indicate short vowels and the "overbar" or macron.  All of the dictionaries published after Johnson's tended to use these accent marks in their pronunciation guides.  Johnson did not provide a pronunciation guide.  He did not show much interest in pronunciation.

Democratic Orthographies - The spelling society has been experimenting with orthography by committee and membership approval.  The result may satisfy no one but shows how the process toward greater regularization might work.  Only 4 to 6 of 15 words were changed:  A minimal respell reform generally starts with the traditional spelling and then removes the superfluous letters to reduce the irregularity.

Personal Views

PRINCIPLES

a) We wil use the shortest, most foneemic variant spelling of a word found
in enny major dictionary.

b) Wen brits and americans (or a considrable number of them) would spel a
word difrently, keep TS (schedule). In the case of uther variants: keep TS
too, unless thare is a shorter and/or cleerly mor common variant, plus the
TS form if that would be one of the variants (offen, often).

c) We cannot change a word if it clashes with anuther HS word with a difrent
pronunciation, e.g., not 'off'> 'of'.

d) Root words (respeld or not) don’t change wen suffixes ar added or
compounds ar bilt, if it is not misleeding for pronunciation.

e) The spelling of propper names is not alterd.

RULES

[1] Cut redundant letters. The respeld sillable must cleerly represent the
corect pronunciation (affixes considderd sepratly), acording to TS patterns.
Shwas folloing a consonant and preceeding L or R + vowel can be cut, but
optionaly also kept, eg travling, evry (or travveling and evvery). “Ought”
with /O:/ becums “aut”, eg baut. In case of dout wich letter to cut, use
folloing moddels: lak (not lac), marrage, mountan, consius, acnollege. After
long i, o, u insert E befor a consonant suffix: i no, he noes, sno, it
snoed, groeth.

Examples: hed, bom, hav, u, wen (or when), acuse, colide, finaly, basicly,
discussd, rekless (not rekles), mesure. Examples of cases with no cuts:
could, should, who, call, pull, pressure, future, unnatural, teemmate, pear.

[2] Primarily stressd short vowels: use a, e, i, o, u, with traditional
English spellings (TS) and use conventional dubbled consonants to avoid the
magic E efect. Eg: hed, hedded, mith, wimmen, yot, cum, cumming. Do not
dubble J, Q, or X (project), before -IC, -ITY, -OGY, or wen the consonant
dusn’t represent the tipical sound of the letter (vision, not vission).

[3] Stressd long a, i, o in the last sillable: folloed by one consonant or
consonant + le, reggularized to magic E formula. Eg sustane, hite, botes.
Use ‘ee’ for stressd long /e/, eg kee, leeflet, except in “be, he, me, she,
the, we” or befor anuther vowel, eg theater.

[4] /f/ sound is speld “f”. Eg fone, enuf, proffecy.
